Have you ever noticed how “Tinsel Town” consistently makes movies about single women who are by themselves but aren’t just a blubbering, crying mess? These movies are popular and do well at the box office because the characters depict real women and the issues that real women go through… the characters are very relatable.
The women in these movies are independent and don’t rely on the company of someone else to supply their happiness. Granted, in a lot of these films, their independence stems from a terrible break-up but nonetheless, happiness is still found in the single life.
Now, that’s not to say that you have to undergo a terrible break-up to be on your own or to do things on your own. In fact, you can be in a relationship or be married and still do things on your own, if that’s what you want to do! It’s perfectly fine to spend some quality time alone with yourself… In fact, the British Journal of Psychology states that spending time with yourself is actually good for your health and that you’re much happier.
As wonderful of a person that you are, you probably have lots of relationships that you’re tending to and it seems like it’s impossible to get the slightest bit of alone time to yourself. You’re afraid that if you tell someone no, that they’ll get mad at you or look at you differently… Well, the reality is that you’re not going to be able to please everyone and saying no is okay.
Go to a Concert
If your favorite band is coming to town, go to their concert by yourself! This is not only going to allow you to see your favorite band but it’s also going to allow you to plan your night the way you want without someone else imposing their ideas on you… just think about it…
What if you rode with your friends to go to the concert… Well, after the concert, you may be ready to go home and go to bed, but your friends want to go out and you don’t want to, but you rode with them… that situation would call for an Uber or Lyft but to prevent any of that from happening. Try one time to enjoy the concert by yourself.
Take Music Lessons
Taking music lessons is a great way to occupy your time when you’re taking time for yourself. First, you would need to determine what type of music lessons you’re interested in and then try to find a school that offers classes of your musical interest. Maybe you’re a great singer and have always wanted to take voice lessons but never took the time to do it… Well, now that you’re taking time out for yourself, it’s the perfect time to warm up those chops or buy yourself a nice guitar!
Traveling is one of the best ways to treat your mind, body, and spirit to self-care. Solo trips are great for getting away from it all and for getting back to you. Some women go on several solo trips of self-discovery and find that they’re finally ready for a relationship.
But it’s also important to know that solo is very important, even if you’re in a happy and committed relationship. It doesn’t mean that you don’t enjoy traveling with your partner, it just means that you need and want to take a solo trip
Exercising is a great thing to do on your own. Some people feel like they need to have someone to work out with for accountability but why can’t you hold your own self accountable? If you want to exercise, you can do it on your own, and you don’t have to join a gym either. You can jog in your neighborhood, or go for a run in the park. You can check your local community centers and look into various Zumba or Hot Yoga classes.
Take Yourself on a Date
Because you’re going on a date with yourself, you can do whatever you want to do and go wherever you want to go. A lot of times, people forget that it’s okay to take yourself on a date every now and then, especially when they’re in a relationship with someone. One night, get dressed up and go to a fancy restaurant and proudly tell the host/hostess “party of one” when they ask you how many will be joining you!
