How to Safely Delay Your Period

It is, of course, normal and natural for women to have menstrual periods. However, while others think it is just a monthly nuisance, for some, it is a nightmare. Sometimes periods bring about so many inconveniences that might affect your daily activities. Have you ever found yourself thinking of ways to delay your period? Well, the internet will provide a plethora of ideas, such as drinking vinegary water and exercising. But which methods are actually safe and effective? Here are a few to get you started:

Using Norethisterone

Norethisterone is a prescription medicine and not a contraceptive pill because it doesn’t prevent pregnancy. It can be used to delay the start of periods when taken three days beforehand. When it becomes convenient to have your periods, just stop the medication, and your period will begin two to three days after. For effective results, you must take three tablets a day for a maximum of 20 days. This will postpone your menstruation for up to 17 days only. This medicine contains progesterone, which prevents the uterine wall from shedding.

This method of period delay is safe but is accompanied by occasional side effects such as nausea, breast tenderness, headache, mood swings, and change in sex drive. People with thrombosis, liver problems, angina, or heart attack are strongly advised to avoid this medicine. Remember, this is a prescription-only medicine and should never be taken without consultation from a doctor.

Taking Combined Contraceptive Pills

If you are using contraceptive pills for birth control, you can also use them to postpone your period. Typically, one week’s worth of placebo pills is taken at the end of a monthly treatment of contraceptive pills, and this break allows menstruation to take place. If you skip this break and start a new packet immediately, you’ll be able to postpone your period.

Using birth control pills is the most common method of menstrual suppression. That being said, it’s advisable to only take up to three monthly packets back to back. That’s because when you delay your period using this method, your uterine walls keep building up, which increases the chances of breakthrough bleeding and feeling bloated.

Why Women Delay Their Period Using Medication

Different women have different experiences during menstruation, but it’s generally an uncomfortable time. A woman may choose to suppress her period for the following reasons:

  • To avoid painful periods (Dysmenorrhea): While some women experience mild cramps and irritation during menstruation, others experience intense, crippling pain. The cramps are severe and unbearable in women who have endometriosis, uterine fibroids, and Pelvic Inflammatory Disease. Severe cramps are also common during the first cycles after the insertion of the Copper Intrauterine Device (IUD).
  • To reduce bleeding: Women with bleeding disorders such as von Willebrand disease (VWD), platelet function disorder, leukemia, and heavy menstrual bleeding (Menorrhagia) tend to have excessive bleeding during their period. This can result in anemia, low blood pressure, or life-threatening conditions such as Hypovolemic shock. Through period delay, they can lower the chances of excessive bleeding.
  • To prevent interference in productivity: Women in athletics, the armed forces, the medical field, publicity, offices, and even those at home have to fulfill their duties every single day. Delaying their period can help them work comfortably without having to worry about blood spot messes or painful cramps.
  • To avoid experiencing the discomforts caused by period: This includes bloating, vomiting, headaches, joint pains, acne, muscle aches, diarrhea, constipation, fatigue, tender breasts, lower back pain, cramps, mood swings, alteration in appetite, cravings, and sleep problems.
  • To go on vacation or attend an event: Nobody wants to have a period when in a bikini or on their wedding day. It feels very uncomfortable, and the idea of a blood spot on a white gown is enough to give you anxiety. Thanks to period delay medication, you can now enjoy a special day without worry.
