A quick guide to getting sun-kissed skin without hitting the sun-beds

Life is better with a tan. Looking sun-kissed can boost your confidence, improve an outfit and can, at times, look slimming. There are many ways to get a tan, and using the sun-beds does not have to be one of them. It is a myth well peddled by many salons, that you’re able to achieve a healthy glow with a sun-bed; however, as reported by Cosmopolitan, Dr. Nick Lowe reiterates that sun-beds emit the wrong type of rays for skin. As such, sun-beds can increase the risk of skin cancer by 75%.

Sun bathing

The sun can be one natural way to achieve that sun-kissed glow, though caution must still be aired. While the sun produces vitamin D which is good for our bones, skin and teeth, it can cause premature ageing and heighten the risk of skin cancer.

If you are to sunbathe, opt for SPF 30 over SPF 50, as the latter can offer a false sense of security. And owed to its chalkiness, you may opt against reapplying it every two hours, as recommended. However, SPF 30 filters 97% of UVB rays and if applied correctly, is very efficient – reapplication is required every two hours, and more so if you have been in the water.

You should also take regular breaks while out in the sun, as this will help to reduce UV intensity. It will also make for a better, healthier tan and reduce the risk of sunburn.


Avoid tan-accelerating creams. However, while such creams are deemed myths, supplements can prove beneficial – a daily 25g beta-caretone supplement can help to improve your skin’s protective dark pigment. However, it should be noted this is no substitute for sunscreen and you still need to be protected.


Many foods are known to increase lycopene, which is the skin’s own SPF. Antioxidants found in tomatoes, and other various red and orange fruit and veg can boost sun protection by as much as 33%. And perhaps even more pleasingly, dark chocolate is packed with flavonoids that can help protect against sunburn.

Natural tanning products

Of course, natural tanning products such as spray-on tans are also a perfectly viable option. The artificial colourant poses no damage to the skin, unlike the harmful UV of sun-beds. Fake tans can provide even coverage, which can make for a natural looking tan and look far better than angry red sunburn.
